More than 50 colleges in England have announced redundancies over the past few weeks. And in the past few days many more colleges have announced plans to close their nurseries.

UNISON is asking members to take a stand now by organising lunchtime protests this Friday (July 3rd) outside FE colleges in England over job cuts and funding.

Happy 10th Birthday National Minimum wage!

Happy 10th birthday national minimum wageWe celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Minimum wage across the Region this April!
Branches were also asked to find ways to mark this important event and to remind everyone of this key part of employment protection that UNISON campaigned for many years to achieve.

Over the last 10 years it's raised the living standards of the lowest paid, and helped close the gap between men and women's pay.

Soon the Low Pay Commission will be making this year's recommendation to the government on the national minimum wage.

Put People First G20 Demonstration 28th of March

Put People First - G20 marchOn the 28th of March thousands marched through London as part of a global campaign to challenge the G20 ahead of their summit on the 2nd of April.

Thank you to all who came to the demonstration from round the region and for those of you who struggled with this wind to carry your branch banners.
UNISON had a great turnout and this did help put pressure on the G20 leaders.

UNISON said we are encouraged by the G20 summit taking ‘steps in the right direction’- but we feel a lot more needs to be done on the global financial crisis and climate change. We also still have worries about gaining agreement to the importance of public services so we will continue to lobby and campaign around these issues. click here for more including pictures from the event.
