Campaigns
Cambs LG Branches
Dear Colleagues
Cambridge City and Cambridgeshire County branches have been working
together since December to develop joint activities based on the unions
Million Voices for Public Services campaign. We are now in a position
to let you know what we have organised and we invite your branch and
members to become share in what has been planned. Our aim is to hold at
least two stalls outside the Guildhall, Cambridge and also a Question
Time Debate at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. These events will be a
great opportunity to promote public services and our union. It will
also be an good opportunity for your members to be engaged with the
Million Voices campaign and to find out more about it from the Question
Time debate. Below, you will find more information about the events.
Stalls outside the Guildhall, Cambridge
We are jointly running a campaign stall outside the Guildhall, Cambridge
to draw attention to members of the public about what is behind our
campaign and then signing them up. Our first stall today was held
today, Wednesday, which despite being very cold we received good support
from the public. People are signing the speech bubbles produced by
UNISON and we are putting them onto a large piece of paper so that
everyone can see that people are supporting our campaign. We are also
taking photographs of people holding up an 'I've added mine' card. Our
next stall will be held on Wednesday 17 February and it would be really
good if you could encourage your members to take part in this activity,
which will take place between 12:00 and 14:00 hrs. If you cannot make
it to Cambridge it would be good to know that you are doing something
similar on the same day and possibly the same time. We would also
welcome any assistant that your branch may be able to give in promoting
these stalls or helping at them.
Question Time Debate - Emmanuel College, Cambridge
On the 10th March, between 16:30 and 17:30 hrs, a panel consisting of
people drawn from across the country will be questioned on public
services. The panel members will not be from political parties. Our
panel members will be people with a strong public sector ethos, whose
work is related to public service delivery and to be known for their
defence of public services. Seating is limited to a maximum of 120
people. Anyone wishing to be in the audience and who would like to ask
a question can reserve a seat by contacting either Cambridge City Branch
on 01223 45707 or unison@cambridge.gov.uk or alternatively on
Cambridgeshire County branch on 01223 717105 or
unison@cambridgeshire.gov.uk Doors open at 16:00 hrs.
Promotion
We wish to enable other Cambridgeshire branches to take part in these
events and it is recognised that this will be logistically difficult for
some. Thus, we would welcome any involvement that your branch or your
members can give to the campaign. We will be contacting various media
outlets to promote these events and your message or messages can be
included in what we produce. Therefore, we would welcome a paragraph
from your branch outlining what is happening in your workplace, which we
will include in the promotional materials, that we will produce, e.g.
handouts, newsletters, press releases, etc.
Don't forget the campaign is not just about our members, it is also
about getting our voices for public services out into the public arena
at a time when services are being hard hit by what has happened
elsewhere in the economy. If you are able to encourage your members to
speak to their friends and family about what we are doing, we would be
very grateful.
We look forward to hearing from you and your branch engaging with us.
Yours
Peter Gaskin
