CAMBRIDGESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ANNOUNCES 450 JOBS TO GO
Cambridgeshire County Council will today announce the potential of 450 jobs to go as part of its cuts programme to Public Services. This can only be considered as a result of this Coalitions Government Public Services slash and burn policy.
UNISON, the Public Sector Trade Union, expressed its concern about the impact that these cuts will have to the future provision of services in Cambridgeshire. Cheryl Godber, UNISON Regional Organiser, said today of the breaking news “This is devastating news, not just for our members who stand lose their jobs but also the impact this will have on the delivery of Public Services in the future. Originally the projected figure of job losses was around the 350 mark – to now say that is more likely to be 450 means that an additional 100 employees and the services that they provide will potentially disappear or be massively decreased. That is really bad news for the communities that have relied upon the services that the Council has provided thus far.”
Cambridgeshire County Council have expressed the desire to have a full and meaningful consultation, with staff and the trade unions that represent staff, in the New Year which UNISON have welcomed. However, Ms Godber went on to say that “It is our understanding that the Council is saying that these cuts will impact on most areas of the council. They are not only looking at job cuts but also other ways of saving money. This may mean not renewing or cutting loose from service contracts with other service providers, which will potentially create additional cuts within the private and voluntary sector. The people of Cambridge need to be aware that this could have a ripple effect throughout a number of employers employing people in Cambridgeshire, impacting on many more people other than just the 450 quoted. This is a sad day for Cambridgeshire as my believe is this is just the tip of a very big iceberg”
